You must know/learn the 6 basic sports nutrition facts before you start. For further information you can read the 10 biggest mistakes.
Hammer fuelling Strategy for 4 – 15 hour + cycle.
After learning the 6 basic facts above you now have the knowledge to apply them to your race day fuelling plan.
Some people will feel comfortable consuming the same products all day long. We think it is wise to use a variety of fuels (with mostly the same properties) to avoid flavour fatigue.
Establish a “BASE FUEL”, you can use for 50-70% of the time. Then plan other “SECONDARY FUELS” to use around the base fuel.
Liquid Fuels are always preferable to solids, as they are digested more easily and are less stress on the gut. However some will feel the need to eat something solid. If this is the case eat small amounts spread out over a long period of time (i.e. every 3-4 hours).
You need to consider these 3 things separately on an hourly basis.
- Nutrition – the calories/kilojoules you take.
- Hydration – the amount of water you drink.
- Electrolytes – the amount of added electrolytes.
1. Nutrition (Kilojoules/calories)
Preferred Base Fuel (50-70%) Perpetuem or Sustained Energy
Both of these fuels have 15 years + of proven results around the world. They contain no simple sugars and are able to offer long sustained energy with the highs and lows associated with gels containing simple sugars.
How
Mixed one 3-4 hour bottle of Perpetuem to start the ride (Freeze overnight). Bring it to the ride cold. Then take several mixtures of Powder (up to 3 hours/ bag) in several zip lock bags. Stop at an aid station approx. every 3 hours and mix a fresh bottle. If you have a support vehicle then great – job done!
Note – These products don’t contain preservatives (for good reason – harmful). Like all mixed sports nutrition drinks they will not taste great after 3-4 hours in a water bottle.
Other Fuels to use.
Other Food Choices – choose wisely, keep low in fats, sugars and fibre.
2. Hydration (water consumption)
Do not count your nutrition consumption as part of your hydration.
Use 2 bottles, 1 for Hydration and 1 for Nutrition. Keep them separate to stop confusion happening over how much of each you have consumed.
Consume approximately around 590-750 ml / hour to be approx. This will largely depend on the weather and other conditions on the day.
3. Electrolytes
Electrolytes are to the body as like “oil is to a car”. Over this sort of distance it is crucial to consume extra electrolytes in the right format.
2 ways of providing Electrolytes, Endurolytes or Endurolytes FIZZ. Both are formulated to provide an excellent cross section of Electrolytes. Salt Tablets only contain sodium and Potassium; you will need a full cross section of Electrolytes (Vitamin B6, Calcium, Magnesium, Manganese, Chloride, Sodium, Potassium, and Tyrosine).
Many variables—body weight, level of fitness, weather conditions, acclimatization level, and biological predisposition—come into play in regards to optimally fulfilling one’s personal electrolyte requirements. It is vital that you experiment with a dosage that is suitable to you.
Generally taking approx. 1-4 Endurolytes or 1-2 Endurolytes FIZZ / hour would be sufficient for most.
Important Note – Electrolytes are not stored in the body. You need to be consistently consuming them every hour throughout the whole day.
