How did you get into your sport?
With a background in running and mountain biking, triathlon always appealed to me as an exciting challenge. After competing in the Husky Running Festival 10km run and watching the triathletes compete, I was inspired to give it a go and immediately fell in love with the sport and community around it.
Hardest thing about your sport?
With a rather minimal background in swimming, I find the swim leg (and all the associated training) quite a challenge. Other than that, managing the training load with life commitments requires some serious planning and discipline which can be difficult at times.
What does your regular training week consist of?
Usually 1-2 run and bike workouts during the work week, 2-3 swim sessions a week and a long ride and long run on the weekends. I will also try to complement my training with strength and stabilizing exercises during the week.
How do you keep motivated?
I have always been a very driven person whether that was at school, university, work, and certainly in my personal fitness and athletic performance.
Overall, being in the outdoors both solo and with others inspires and motivates me greatly. I love being outside training and racing hard as much as possible. Being a better athlete and seeing personal progress through training and race results is also a huge motivation of mine to continue to turn up and train even when life throws curve balls (busy work schedules, unexpected weather, etc.)
Lastly, like any athlete with a Strava account, I also get great motivation in chasing Strava PR’s, KOMs, and maintaining a consistent Training Progress graph.
Goals (Future plans and Career Goals)
* To qualify for the World Triathlon Age Group World Championships in Wollongong in 2025.
* Complete my first Ironman 70.3 this coming November (and hopefully more in the future)
* Striving to win my local tri club’s age/club championship for the 2024/25 season
In addition to the above triathlon goals, I am hoping to complete my first road half marathon race in 2025 with a target time of sub 1hr 30mins. I also wish to start racing some longer endurance events including trail running events with my eyes set to complete a 50km trail race in 2025 as well as start racing some local cycling club crit races.
Best Piece of advice you have received?
The best piece of advice and my favorite phrase related to training is the old adage “Consistency is key”. There really are no two ways about it, so doing everything from fuelling your training correctly and maximizing recovery to ensure you can continue to show up to all your training sessions is what produces the best results.
